There are three ways you can experience Laughton Lodge ~ personal stays for up to a week, volunteering on a work day or attendance at a weekend workshop or event.   Meals are not included in your stay unless you are volunteering and you should ensure you have food with you as there is only a small village shop within walking distance, which has traditional opening hours (closed Sat afternoon & Sunday).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get here?
Laughton is about 6 miles outside of Lewes. Our address is Laughton Lodge, Common Lane, Laughton East Sussex BN8 6BY.  Shawfield is our community centre where you will be staying if you have booked a guest room.  Please park in the carpark and walk past the first U-shaped villa on your right to the 60’s building on your right – this is Shawfield.  Please let us know when you are arriving so someone can be around to meet you.

Please note that public transport is limited in the area. Buses into Lewes run Monday – Friday 5 times a day only.

What do I do when I arrive?
Please contact our caretaker, Peter prior to your arrival to advise what time you will be arriving – he will show you to your room. When he is not available, we may let you know your room number in advance and you can make yourself at home.  Please make use of the small kitchen near to the guest rooms and the dining room for eating.  We often have potluck on a Friday night either in the dining room or in a community house, which you are welcome to join.

What is provided for me?
Sheets/duvets/pillows, towels, fully-quipped kitchen, fridge, condiments, showers/bathroom, wood stove/dining area for relaxing.  Please note, that unfortunately we cannot always provide company/support during your stay as we all have our individual schedules/work times and do not live ‘communally’, rather we live separately in our homes and come together when we choose to.  You will need to be self-sufficient during your stay.

What do I need to bring?
Please bring a copy of one form of I.D. (passport or drivers license), your personal belongings, food and a torch.

What safety procedures do I need to observe?
Please make yourself aware of fire exits when you arrive.  Ensure that all kitchen equipment is turned off after use.  You need to take full responsibility for children playing in trees, treehouses, swings etc.  We cannot be responsible for any loss, damage or injury during your stay.

What’s the environment like?
We are a community sharing land, buildings, time and energy, however we do not live ‘communally’.  There are 23 acres of land, 22 houses/flats and many animals – horses, chickens, pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. This is our home and we are happy to share it with you during your stay, but we ask that you respect the privacy of those who live here and that you take responsibility for yourself, others and the environment while you are here – treat everyone and everything you find with love & respect and enjoy your stay.

Can I bring my pet?
No, sorry, pets are not allowed.

What do I need to pay?  How do I pay?
Please see above for tariffs and how to pay.  Payment is required in advance to confirm your booking. In confirming your booking, you agree to all of the terms above.

Is this a smoke free and alcohol free space?
If you wish to smoke we would ask you to do so outside of Shawfield and definitely outside of the guest rooms. There is a fire pit and benches on the patio and you would be welcome to sit here. We are not an alcohol free community but we would ask you to use alcohol in moderation and responsibly and dispose of containers in the recycling bins in the car park.
