Volunteer at Laughton Lodge
Join us for a work (‘busy’) day
On the first Sunday of every month we spend a day working together on the land and buildings at Laughton Lodge, and sharing a community lunch. We call this ‘busy day’ (a name given by one of the kids which stuck), and they’re one of the best ways to experience community life here first-hand.
Volunteers are welcome to join us for busy days. This might involve tending the community allotment, clearing brambles in the meadow, mulching the apple trees, fixing something that’s broken or helping maintain our community buildings. The work varies with the seasons and the weather, and there’s always something to suit different abilities and energy levels. No particular skills are needed, just a willingness to get stuck in.
If you’re curious about community living, or even considering a move to Laughton Lodge one day, coming along for a busy day is a great way to get a feel for what it’s like here. You’ll get a chance to meet some of the people who live here, have a chat and ask any questions you might have as we work together.
What to expect
Busy days run from 10am to around 4pm, but you’re welcome to leave after lunch or whenever you need to. We work through the morning, break for a home-cooked community lunch that everyone eats together, and finish off the big jobs in the afternoon. We’ll provide lunch and keep you going with hot or cold drinks throughout the day.
You don’t need to bring anything with you, but please wear old clothes and footwear suitable for outdoor work. Waterproofs are helpful if it looks like rain, and a water bottle if it’s hot. If you’re joining us in winter or spring be warned that our beautiful land gets very muddy, so walking boots or wellies are a good idea!
Children are very welcome and there are usually other kids around to play with, though they’ll need to be supervised by their own parents or guardians. Unfortunately we’re not able to accommodate visitor pets.
Get in touch
To join a busy day or find out when the next one is happening, just drop us a message. We’d love to meet you.
Stay a little longer
If you’re travelling a distance to get here or you’d like to stay a bit longer, our guest rooms are available for volunteers. Camping is also possible during the warmer months.
